Bio
I was born and raised in the midwest, in Kansas City, MO. Growing up, we always had a computer, and I started tinkering with them and programming at a young age. I found that I had a natural intuition about working with computers. When the time for college came around, I wanted to give myself a challenge, so I decided to try “bioinformatics” instead of strict computer science. I had very little biological background, but while studying at Baylor University, the strong Bioinformatics program increased my proficiency and curiosity. After earning my BS in Bioinformatics, I decided to pursue further education and I am currently enrolled in the graduate school at the University of Tennessee, working towards a PhD in Computer Science. My research emphasis is on Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, but I don’t let that limit the courses I’ve taken. I hope to develop resources to increase understanding of the developmental networks and biological processes so important to our lives.
Research Interests
My research interests include: data management, integration, and visualization techniques; data mining and statistical analysis; regulatory networks, comparative genomics, and functional genomics. The tremendous scales involved with these topics make them very challenging, but the insights they can provide are incredibly useful and rewarding.
Personal Life
In my free time, I hang out with my beautiful wife Golda and our friends. We like to play disc golf at the several courses available in Knoxville and explore the wide variety of food found at the many restaurants. We also enjoy hiking, camping, and backpacking in the mountains of East Tennessee. I’ve been riding a motorcycle almost daily for about 6 years now, to the point of selling my truck since I no longer need or use it (we carpool as necessary).
